INEC schedules emergency meeting over attacks on offices

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled an emergency meeting to deliberate the incessant attacks on its facilities.

This was disclosed in a press statement on Friday, by the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr. Festus Okoye.

He stated that the spate of fire incidents involving its facilities has persisted and this has brought worry to the commission.

He further revealed that the commission received disturbing reports from Enugu State via the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the State, Emeka Ononamadu, who reported that the commission’s office in Udenu Local Government Area was set ablaze.

Festus expressed his dismay at the attacks on the commission’s facilities, stating that this is the third incident involving INEC’s Local Government offices in 3 states including Abia and Akwa Ibom States respectively.

He revealed that the commission has convened an emergency meeting to this effect to discuss this ‘disturbing trend’.

The meeting is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Wednesday, 19th May 2021 with all the Resident Commissioners of the commission.

He further stated that all activities in relation to the ongoing expansion of voter access to Polling Units, preparations for the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and all scheduled and pending elections will proceed as planned.
