A Security Expert, retired Colonel Chinedu Owhonda, has said the curfew imposed on the State by the government is a measure to safeguard citizens and residents against attacks by unknown gunmen.
Retired Colonel Owhonda, in an interview with our Correspondent, described the measure as proactive to checkmate the activities of perpetrators committing heinous crimes.
According to him, same measures were put in place in Abia State which has led to the arrest of over four hundred alleged Boko Haram members.
“The curfew that has been imposed by the government is a good one meant to secure the lives of residents. If you recall, these perpetrators strike at night from 11pm and early hours of the morning. So the curfew will proactively checkmate whoever that is carrying out the heinous activities to be either stopped, curtailed or eliminated.
“The curfew will also help the security agencies make wider patrols and secure the environment. So many things have happened in other parts of the country, the stop and search measure carried out in Abia State that have arrested over four hundred (400) alleged Boko Haram members between the ages of 15 and 20.
“Let’s not forget the truck load of ammunition and weapon that was intercepted by some groups of vigilante in Anambra state when the vehicle summersaulted. Let’s not be deceived, even Aso Rock is not safe, the Chief of Staff to the President, his place was almost bugged.
“All these are signs of a failed state, government of Rivers State has taking the best proactive measure to protect its people”
He stressed that no state in the country is safe presently while suggesting a nationwide curfew.
“They should put the curfew nationwide to check mate the movement of marauders, because the Governor of Niger state has warned that the perpetrators are within us. Last week, social media carried it that some Boko Haram fighters were arrested in Abuja and they were left to go.
“These people are just moving around, occupying places, waiting time for strike”
He advised the public to bear with the state government until current insecurity issues are sorted out.
Recall that the revised statewide curfew declared by the Rivers state government in the wake of attacks on police formations took effect on Tuesday from 7pm to 6am instead of the initial 10pm to 6am.
Governor Nyesom Wike, in a broadcast said the review was done to stop dastardly attacks on security formations in the state by bandits.
