Rivers Police investigate killing of man over N4000 debt

The Rivers State Police Command has said an investigation is ongoing to unravel the events behind the killing of a middle-aged man earlier this week in Eleme Local Government Area.

The young man identified as Michael Oforji was killed by Christopher Ike, a police inspector at Aleto in Eleme over a debt of N4000 he owed a woman.

Commenting on the development, Nnamdi Omoni, the state’s public relations officer noted that the police officer hit the victim in his stomach after the deceased attacked him during an argument with the lady.

Omoni explained that the officer was called to settle the matter involving the woman and the late Mike.

The police spokesman noted that the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary, adding that an investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding Mike’s death.

He, however, assured that justice will be served, stressing that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan has ordered a full investigation into the matter.

Omoni also appealed to residents and family members of the diseased to remain calm and not resort to jungle justice.
