Wike set to ban public transportation in Rivers, permanently shut Oil Mill market

Florence Uwaeme

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said he is considering placing a ban on public transportation in the state.

Wike disclosed this during a covid-19 broadcast on Friday.

He said the ban is premised on the inability of the commercial drivers to adhere to the social distancing rules outlined by the state government.

He said the conclusions would be made after a state security meeting on Saturday.

He added the state would roll out buses to cushion the effects of the ban.

Rivers State recorded an additional 6 covid-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the total active cases to 9 with 2 deaths.

The governor also threatened to shut the Oil Mill market permanently over the failure of traders to stop night trading at the market.

He also warned leaders Rumuokoro, Elimgbu and Rumukwurusi, saying his administration will impose a total lockdown of the area if they don’t stop engaging in night trading.
