There are reports that some personnel of the Rivers State Police Command stormed Eneka community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State and mass arrested residents there over the killing of a female police officer by her male colleague.
W/Sgt Lovender Elekwachi was on Thursday killed by Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah who was attached to the Rivers State Task Force against street trading and illegal motor parks.
The late Woman Sergeant was shot while controlling traffic by her colleague whom the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said has been arrested, disarmed and undergoing Orderly Room Trial.
Omoni also said two other members of the Task Force have also been arrested and are being questioned while the Hilux vehicle belonging to the Task Force has been impounded and the corpse of the Woman Sergeant deposited in the mortuary.
No reason was given for the invasion of the area on Friday by officers of the command.
Speaking with our correspondent, a resident of the area who identified himself as Chinemerem said the mass arrest was in connection with the killing of a policewoman, Sgt Lovender Elekwachi.
Another source and a commercial driver plying Eneka route, Mr Okechukwu narrated what led to the killing of the policewoman as saying that: “The state taskforce personnel got to Eneka community and started destroying the goods of the traders they met there.
“The community boys came out and urged the state taskforce personnel to stop damaging the goods of the traders.
“The situation suddenly resulted into shouting match between the community boys and the taskforce personnel.
“The policewoman who was unfortunately killed saw the situation and ran there to intervene because she was attached to the Eneka Police Division and she lived in the area too.
“While the slain policewoman was pleading with the taskforce not to destroy the goods but should rather confiscate them, one of the policemen attached to the taskforce cocked his rifle in an attempt to shoot one of the community boys.
“Unfortunately, the bullet was dispensed and hit the policewoman.
“When the taskforce personnel noticed that they have killed somebody, they drove off.”
