Police Sergeant demoted for assaulting medical doctor in Akwa Ibom

Imohimi Edgal, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, has ordered the demotion of Sergeant Edidiong Alexander to the rank of a corporal for assaulting one Dr Daniel Edet, a medical doctor with the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

Edet was assaulted by the officer while on duty during the lockdown at Nung Uko junction.

According to a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Nnudam Fredrick, there was an altercation between the police officer attached to Safer Highway in the process of enforcing the lockdown order.

Fredrick said the erring officer was first arrested and detained and later subjected to an orderly room trial.

“The erring officer who had been in detention was subjected to orderly room trial in line with the Police Act and Regulations and was found guilty by the adjudicating officer.

“The orderly room proceeding was reviewed and he was reduced in rank from sergeant to corporal,” the statement said

The statement added that the commissioner had apologised to the Nigeria Medical Association in the state.
