Coronavirus: CAN backs Wike, tells churches to stop gathering

By Brave Dickson

As the covid 19 pandemic dares Nigeria with its deadly spread, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rivers State Chapter has thrown its weight behind Governor Nyesom Wike’s ban on religious gatherings.

The state Chairman of CAN, Apostle (Dr), Stanley Dimkpa in an interview with our correspondent enjoined all churches to obey the order, noting that Christians were made to respect constituted authority as enshrined in the scripture.

He said: The bible has made it clear that wisdom is more profitable to direct.

“We the church leaders have welcomed the government’s ban on religious gatherings in order to reduce the spread of covid 19 in the state and county.

“As a church, we believe in the scripture that enjoins us to be subjected to constituted authority.

“And we welcome the restrictions on religious programmes by the state government since it does not stop we Christians from reading our Bible, praying to our God or attending to our quiet time.

“We strongly believe that with our prayers, the Almighty God will intervene and banish this coronavirus pandemic from our land.

“We, therefore, appeal to all church leaders to comply strictly to the government’s directives on social distancing.”
