An environmental expert who doubles as the Chairman, Nigeria Environmental Society, Rivers State Chapter, Kingsley Nwobidi has faulted the Wike led-state-government over the poor handling of soot and wastes in the state.
The expert observed that the state government had not been using professionals to handle environmental issues.
He said: “The issue of waste management has not been properly handled by the Rivers State Government.
“It is not about patronising political associates or supporters by giving them the job of waste management to handle.
“The issue of waste management has not been properly addressed in Rivers State.

“You are aware that the soot has been a very big problem in Port Harcourt and its environs, this government has not taken any proactive step enough to ensure that this problem is reduced or solved once and for all.
“The soot problem is still persisting and the general masses are inhaling and suffering it.
“It is the duty of the government to take a proactive step and nip this soot in the bud
“What stops the government to come up with a mechanism to trace the source and end it once and for all?
“It is not about committees and panels and all that, something needs to be done.
“One area this government is not getting it right regarding issues of the environment is that they don’t use professionals to handle environmental issues and that is why the problem keeps persisting.”
