Most Nigerian bloggers are copycats with zero interest in investigative journalism. All they do is wake up, search for trending news from popular sites, copy and edit the story or paste the story on their blogs verbatim without credit to the original writer.
Yesterday, the story of a Port Harcourt makeup artist that bought a car for her boyfriend after her friends mocked him of being careless was everywhere on Nigerian social media space.
The truth is that we still are unaware of whether a car less Port Harcourt girl bought a car for her boyfriend or not; which isn’t feasible at all because Port Harcourt girls are smarter than that. It isn’t feasible because no struggling Port Harcourt girl without her own car will save for two whole years; not to invest in her imaginary makeup artistry or invest in another business or even buy her own car will go buy a car for her boyfriend, not even husband. It isn’t possible at all.
Almost all blogs and online newspapers ran with the story. The picture of a couple that they’ve all been using was lifted from YouTube. It is said to be the pictures of a Ghanaian YouTube couple.
When the story broke yesterday, Jasmine Boateng – the original owner of the picture reacted thus “I never knew I was Nigerian or a makeup artist or even rich enough to save. And I bought a car… this is news to me.” How can one transform from being a Ghanaian to a Nigerian car buyer even without being aware of it herself.
What am I driving it with this article, you may ask? Well, my advice to you out there is to not believe every and anything you see on social media.
Dear copycat bloggers, as we are about entering a new year, I urge you to change from your copycat ways.
