Tina Amanda

An expert in Human Kinetics, Dr Mina Ibitamuno Dennis, has said that lack of stress management amongst people is the leading cause of death and mental illness.

Dr Dennis who is also a lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics Health and Safety, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, stated this while delivering a lecture titled: “Stress Management in our Society” at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre for undergraduate students in Port Harcourt.

According to him, overthinking, poverty, failure, anxiety, disappointment, divorce, conflicts and lack of motivation are mainly responsible for several ailments in the society, and the wear and tear of physical, emotional damages of a person.

Dr Dennis also urged people to manage themselves adequately in the face of challenges.

He noted that stress is a global phenomenon that has detrimental outcomes and consequences on physical, psychological and emotional well being of a person’s health condition.

“The society we live in is in an era of comfort and consolation, thus, there is a surplus of rising demands that strain the human beings physiologically and psychologically.

“Stress can be described as a condition of having internal or demands that are imbalanced to the human capacity for responding or coping abilities to those demands.

“People in the society find it difficult to meet up their demands as a result of it, sickness begins to crawl in. To avert the sudden collapse of people or death for not being able to meet up with the conditions of life, I am advocating that people should always create time to rest.

“I am also pleading with the government to create jobs for the populace, implement favourable policies that will reduce the huge economic burden people are faced with. The government should also give out soft loans to people to grow their businesses”

He, however, suggested that stress could be managed by people not living above their resources and regular medical checkup.

“Stress could be managed, we have to make use of health facilities to check Blood Pressure and any other ailment that can cause sudden death.

“Management is such that you make sure you handle your resources well, not everything you see, you must purchase, you must live according to what you have for better sustainability”
