Degema to implement Free Tertiary Education Programme

The Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Tony Philmoore, has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Degema Local Government Area Free Tertiary Education Scheme Committee.

Philmoore said the committee proved to him in the course of the exercise that indeed they were men of integrity and impeccable character.

Speaking while receiving the report of the committee, the council boss reiterated his resolve to implement the Free Tertiary Education Programme as soon as possible without putting the council into debts.

He also promised to judiciously manage resources for the benefit of the whole local government area.

Philmoore said the council would liaise with the affected schools to reconcile records in order to commence payment without delay.

The council boss credited the legislative assembly whom he said made enabling laws that empowered him to carry out the programme.

He, therefore, thanked the councillors and prayed them to make more laws that would bring development to the people.

He also dissolved the Free Tertiary Education Scheme Committee and promised to work with members in the near future.

Earlier Alternate Chairman of the verification committee, Professor Victor Omuaru, said the committee screened a total of 768 students from five schools namely: Rivers State University, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, the University of Port Harcourt and Ken Sarowiwa Polytechnic.

Professor Omuaru said the committee worked within its terms of reference and suggested that the scheme be expanded to include post-primary schools and the Rivers State School of Health Technology and Federal College of Education, Omoku in the second phase.
