Exactly one month after two police officers, ASP Godwin Anwuri and Sargent Gift Ojimini together with their boat driver, Festus Friday, were kidnapped while on patrol along the Ngo River in Andoni area of Rivers state, there are no words from the police on efforts to rescue them.

Sources in the area said the gunmen also attacked fishermen at Oyorokoto Fishing settlement and carted away two 40-horse-Power engine boats on the day of the raid.

“They were heading to the Asarama/Ebukuma Bridge where they usually station to protect commuters travelling to neighbouring towns and villages of Andoni mainland when they were kidnapped” a local source who did not want to be named told theportcitynews.

The Kidnappers only made contact with the police division for the first two weeks after they were kidnapped, demanding ransom for the victims.

ASP Godwin Anwuri, father of five from Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State was the leader of the police duo. His family also expressed displeasure with the slow rescue effort of the police.

Community sources said the security situation in the area has become worse recently as rival cult gangs have intensified attacks on towns, villages and marine travellers.

Nnamdi Omoni, the police public relations officer said on the day of the abduction that the force had dispatched teams to arrest the hoodlums and rescue the officers unharmed.

However, there has been no update on the fate of the men since a rumoured contact to the wife of one of the victims was announced on the radio.
