The Rivers State Ministry of Education on Monday announced the release of the 2018/2019 Basic Education Certificate Examination results.

The Permanent Secretary, ministry of education, Dagogo Hart, revealed that through the platform of Rivers State Education Management Information System (RivEMiS), the ministry recorded an overwhelming 98% of registration of junior secondary school, ( basic 9/JSS3) candidates for the examination from both public and private secondary schools.

The permanent secretary also called on schools to check their students’ BECE results on the RivEMiS site and also go to the ministry’s office at the Secretariat to collect the results/certificates of their students.

He said a total of 881 public and private schools registered 69,450 candidates in the 2018/2019 basic education certificate examination, adding that out of the registered number of candidates, 292 public and 589 private schools were the total number of schools in the state that enrolled for the exams.

Hart said 39,489 and 29,961 candidates were registered by public and private secondary schools respectively, stressing that out of the total number of registered candidates, 33,049 were males while 36,401 were females.

He said in the BECE 2018/2019 exams, RivEiS recorded the highest number of registered candidates Obio/Akpor LGA which was 22,671, while Opobo/ Nkoro LGA recorded the lowest number of registered candidates, which was 154 candidates.

He added that Abua/ Odual LGA with 365 registered candidates recorded the highest average score (68.26%) and Tai LGA with 651registered candidates recorded the lowest average score (52.60%).

Hart said students sitting for the basic education certificate examination must ensure to pass all compulsory subjects which are: English language, Mathematics, Social Studies and basic science, stressing that any candidate who fails any of the compulsory subject is expected to resit the failed subject, and candidates who fail to resit their failed subjects or fail to resit their exams shall be made to repeat JSS3.

“Schools are therefore warned not to promote any student who failed” he cautioned.

“Public and private schools alike are not allowed to admit students without records to the certificate that will be given to all successful candidates that wrote the exams. We have a total of 81% pass rate in the examination conducted and 19% of the candidates who sat for the exams will be required to resit one or more of the compulsory subjects”

Hart emphasized that “schools with incomplete or no continuous assessment will not have their results released to them.

He, however, commended the Rivers State governor, governor Wike and his senior special assistant on ICT for the implementation of RivEMis which he said has aided his ministry in job efficiency. He said the state ministry of education is the first MDA to gain from the state ICT project.
