Maritime Workers inaugurate Port Harcourt Operational Sector

Maritime Workers Union Rivers State chapter has inaugurated a new operational sector known as ‘The Town Branch’, of Seamen/Maritime workers Union of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.

Comrade Tamuno George-wealth, its Chairman said that the executive will ensure employment for members and protection of all seafarers in the unit.

He said: “Maritime union was born in 1964 by the late Queen Elizabeth of England. It is designed to bring all Mariners together and regulate the Marine business to take care of member’s welfare.

“It is concerned with creating jobs for seafarers and ensuring that only qualified professionals are employed.

“We will ensure that every seafarer in this state, particularly in Port Harcourt, is employed and their welfare well spelt out to their owners and possible training organised for Mariners when necessary.

“We will checkmate and ensure that non-Mariners occupying Mariners positions will be struck out and replaced with qualified seafarers.

“We will also generate funds for our state and national bodies to keep up with the rules and regulations of the Maritime Workers Union in Nigeria.”

Chairman of the Inaugural Committee and Chairman Rivers State seafarers district, Felix Okuru, congratulated the inductees for their boldness. He advised them to stay out of trouble as being a seafarer does not entail being troublesome.

“By the grace of God, we are the largest and strongest trade union in this district, and we are giving you the license to operate in the ‘Town’ axis.

“We are not giving you license to cause trouble or get involved in criminal activities, because if you are found culpable, we will ensure you are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Okuru urged them to be good ambassadors and generals of the union and be known for peace wherever they are found.

George-wealth thanked the District chairman and assured him they will put in their best in performing their duties as seafarers.
