Pipeline fire rocks Rivers Community, farmlands destroyed

Fire from a pipeline belonging to Nigerian AGIP Oil Company, NOAC< has wrecked damage to farmlands, burning crops worth millions in Ubeta Community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of River State.

The Pipeline is part of the Nembe-creek trunk line.

The fire which began in the early hours of Friday, formed a thick smokey cloud over the community’s skyline, raising fears of health complications.

Samson Ikoni, an indigene of the community who spoke to theportcitynews on phone said no one has so far been declared dead from the fire outbreak, but stressed that tens hectares of farmland had been destroyed.

He said the company has not yet visited the community to access the damage, adding that the fire was still tearing through farmlands.

Ikoni said the fire has raised health scare in the community, adding that people have been inhaling the thick smoke clouding the air due to the fire.

The community leader told our correspondent that the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained but said it looked like it was caused by vandals.

He called on Agip to quench the fire and save the community from further health complications.

Agip could not be reached for comments as at the time of filing this report.
