Foundation to carryout free uterine fibroid surgeries in Port Harcourt

At least 100 patients suffering from of uterine fibroids would be given free surgeries at the weekend in Port Harcourt, from the OB Lulu-Briggs Foundation.

The coordinator of programmes at the OB Lulu-Briggs Foundation, Mrs Ineba Tongkam, who announced the upcoming surgeries in a media briefing in Port Harcourt explained that the medical reach out is in commemoration of the 18th anniversary of the foundation, adding that the surgeries are targeted at raising awareness about Uterine Fibroid.

Mrs Tongkam, said the event, which would take place at the La Sien Pavilion, 22, Forces Road, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, is organized in partnership with the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH and the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH.

A consultant gynaecologist at the UPTH, Dr Rosemary Ogu said at the media briefing that one out of every two women has a uterine fibroid.

She explained that the prevalence of the health condition is more rampant than people imagine.

She praised OB Lulu Briggs Foundation for the plan to sponsor the treatment for women suffering from uterine fibroid.

She said that with a population of 200 million people amidst lean financial resources, there is no way the Nigerian Government alone can take care of the health needs of the populace.
