It’s unconstitutional to declare Rivers a Christian State – Shehu Sani

The immediate past senator representing Kaduna Central at the national assembly, Shehu Sani has said the declaration of Rivers State as a Christian State is wrong and unconstitutional.

Sani was responding to verbal wars launched by Muslim leaders over the demolition of a mosque in Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt.

The alleged demolition has thrown up statements made by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike that Rivers State is a Christian State.

Wike had at different fora stated that the state is a Christian state.

His statements have also pitched him against Muslims in the north who felt it was bad for the governor to declare such.

They argued that the alleged mosque demolition was an attempt by the state government to attack Muslims in the state.

Prominent in this school thought include former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau and Director-General of Muslim Right Concerns, MURIC, Ishaq Akintola.

“It’s purely a constitutional matter, no state or state Governor should declare his state a Christian or a Muslim state. The declaration that Rivers is a Christian state is wrong and unconstitutional” Sani wrote on Facebook on Friday.
