Drivers in Rivers State to be fined N10,000 for dumping wastes on road

Commercial drivers operating in Rivers state have been warned against the indiscriminate dumping of wastes on roads and streets in Port Harcourt, the State capital and its environs.

The Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency, RIWAMA, Bro Felix Obuah who gave warning on Tuesday while on enlightenment campaign in some major motor parks in Port Harcourt, the State capital said RIWAMA law of Rivers State No. 2. 2014 stipulates that “Where a person litters or dumps waste from a vehicle in an unauthorized, place or outside the approved dumping time, the offender shall be liable to a fine of N10,000 or community service for 3 days or both”

Obuah expressed dismay that commercial drivers regularly dump waste indiscriminately at unauthorized places and outside the approved dumping time, even after Service Providers working with the Agency have completed their work for the day, thereby defacing already clean streets and roads.

He appealed to commercial drivers to have a change of attitude or face arrest and prosecution.
