The Youth Resource Centre, Bonny, is a centre that is poised with the provision of myriads of services to youths of Bonny Island.
The Youth Resource Centre sees to the social, health, education, employment and life skills provision to youths free of charge.
The Youth Resource Centre has put in place programs created to help direct and impact the children and youths of Bonny Island.
Some of these programmes include; The Youth Festival of Life, The Youth Employability program, The Summer Holiday Camp and The Annual Bonny Island Spelling Bee Competition.
The Annual Bonny Island Spelling Bee Competition held its 6th edition on Saturday, the 6h day of July.
This event was a huge success as it brought about 63 contestants from 21 schools in Bonny Island.
The event of the day opened by the National Anthem, followed by a welcome address from two young ladies from the centre, a documentary about the Youth Resource Centre portraying its achievements since its creation on February 2014.
The competition was headed by the overall judge, two other judges and a pronouncer. The competition had six rounds; during the first round, the contestants were not evicted when they fail to spell a word correctly. Eviction started in round two. At the end of the six rounds, there emerged three contestants standing.
Another round of spelling was conducted and it produced the second runner-up of the competition, Master Hart Edward from Lucile Education Centre. The last round brought about the winner Master Abinye Prosper from Faith Academy Secondary School and the first runner-up, Miss Brown Miebi from St Patrick Anglican Model School.
The winner was presented with a hundred thousand naira cheque, a plaque and book gifts for his school from the centre and had an extra hundred and fifty thousand naira from dignitaries at the event.
The first runner-up was given Fifty thousand naira cheque from the centre and an extra ninety thousand naira from dignitaries at the event. While the second runner-up was given thirty thousand naira cheque from the winner and had an extra fifty thousand from dignitaries.
All the schools present at the event were given gifts and the director of the centre, Mr Excel Ukpohor, encouraged the contestants not to be deterred by the reason of not winning today because they are all champions. He went ahead to thank the teachers for preparing and working with the centre’s schedule to make the event a reality.
