Customs donate rice, other items to Orphanage Homes in Port Harcourt

The Presidential sub-committee on the distribution of relief materials and items for Internally Displaced Persons and Orphanage Homes of the Nigeria Customs Service has continued it’s nationwide exercise in Port Harcourt, Zone C Headquarters, aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of Orphans and the vulnerable in the society.

In a chat with News Men, the Chairman of the committee, Compt. Salihu Yakubu, said the exercise is in furtherance of the directives of President Muhammudu Buhari’s desire and love to cushion the effects of sufferings at orphanage homes and other vulnerable in the society.

According to him: ” We have done the exercise in all the six geo-political zones. Items such as rice are given two bags per Orphan at their respective Orphanage Homes. ”

Reacting on the Possibility of double allocation, Compt. Salihu asserted that the committee is mindful of that as members of the committee made up of five comptrollers and a Deputy Comptroller are officers with wealth of knowledge and experience in administration.

“We have an internal mechanism to check and avoid double allocation of items ”

He assured that ” Any individual or group that indulges in such act shall be dealt with in accordance with the Law and deprived of the items. ”

On the criteria for the allocation, he said, ” There’s always a yardstick to ascertain the authenticity of the Orphanage homes in accordance with the association or organization’s certifications. ”

“We have our covet operatives, the Customs intelligence unit, who screens and confirms the existence and authenticity of an Orphanage home. ”

Compt. Salihu called on all beneficiaries to use the items for the purpose allocated.
