Nigerians all over the country on Tuesday staged peaceful protests to mark the 2019 national day of mourning, a day set aside to mourn victims of violent killings, terrorism, kidnapping and police brutalities and also for the citizens to demand that security agencies provide accountability on the death of Nigerians around the 6 geopolitical zones and FCT.
It was equally set aside to ensure that every death is investigated, accounted for and a file opened for each.
The event in Rivers State was led by the members of Civil Society Organizations and other concerned Nigerians who staged a peaceful protest on the streets of Port-Harcourt over the reoccurring killings and Kidnapping in the state.
Mourners converged at the Isaac Boro Park and marched through the streets of Port Harcourt adorned in Black. They also displayed placards with different inscriptions.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, the state Chairman of the Civil Society Organizations, Enefaa Godswill said the police have failed in protecting lives and properties of the citizenry.
He decried the spate of killings in Rivers State and urged security agencies to live up to their responsibilities.
In his remarks, a social activists and the executive director of ” We The People Organization ” Ken Henshaw, said the Nigeria Police should be held responsible if the killings continues.
He said that the police have refused to act so as to stop the killings in the state, stressing that his organisation recorded at least 46 violent deaths in April alone.
Other protesters who spoke to Theportcitynews expressed their disapproval over the handling of the killings and Kidnapping in the state.
According to them, lives are no longer sacrosanct as people are being slaughtered at every turn, adding that police seem to be overwhelmed by the violence.
They, however, called on the government to muster the political will with which the issues would be addressed to ensure a sustainable and lasting peace in the country.
