Shell Generates More Than 13% Power To Nigeria’s National Grid

Gladys Nweke

Shell Nigeria said its companies contributed 13 per cent grid-connected electricity in 2018.

Inside the IOC’s recently launched Briefing Notes today, 21 May 2019, it said the electricity was supplied through one of its subsidiaries, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC’s Joint Venture power plant, Afam VI.

Afam VI with a 650-megawatts generating capacity is located in Afam village in Oyigbo local government area of Rivers used combined cycle gas turbine technology that burns 40 per cent less gas than plants using older open cycle technologies.

According to the Note, in 2018, approximately 10 per cent of the country’s domestic gas was supplied by the SPDC, most of which was used for power generation.

In 2017 alone, Afam VI supplied approximately 14 per cent of Nigeria’s grid-connected electricity and the plant has delivered over 25.97 trillion watt-hours of electricity into the Nigerian grid in the last 10 years, a statement credited Osagie Okunbor, managing director of SPDC around June last year.

Same 2017, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, renewed the power generation license for the plant for another 10 years.

The power plant generates the electricity required to power over 3 million Nigerian homes at peak performance.
