Bribe-seeking soldier shoots man dead

A bribe-seeking soldier has shot dead one Mr Festus Odeku in Owan West, Edo State.

The incident happened in Okagboro Village on Wednesday.

ThePortcitynews gathered from sources that the deceased was riding a motorcycle when a team of soldiers manning a checkpoint stopped him.

However, he refused to part with the requested funds for bribe leading to an altercation with one of the soldiers who allegedly shot him dead on the spot.

The source stated that the killing sparked a wave of anger with the youths threatening to expel the soldiers from the community.

A community leader who did not want to be named told theportcitynews that bribe collection by soldiers in the village has become the norm and those who refused to pay in the past were roundly beaten and assaulted.

He added that it has now taken a dangerous twist as lives are being lost, stressing that the community has reported the incident to the police.
