Man released from Port Harcourt prison after serving 27 years on false allegation

Mr Clinton Kanu, a 57-year-old native of Abia State has been released from the Port Harcourt prison after spending 27 years.

Mr Kanu was convicted of murdering an unnamed man in February 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The matter which went from the state high court was also seconded by the appeal court.

However, the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned the case after properly scrutinizing the case on April 5, declaring Mr Kanu innocent.

Mr Kanu while speaking to TPCN on Thursday, called for judicial reforms.

He said that the 27 years it took to establish his innocence would have been avoided if the necessary reforms were put in place.

He said that though it took 27 years to establish his innocence, he is happy that truth later triumphed over falsehood.

He said that there are many people like him in prison who are servicing different sentences on trumped-up charges.

Mr Kanu stressed that he would try as much to adapt in society and start life afresh.
