The Rivers State Chess Association says its one day under-14 Chess tournament in Port Harcourt was in preparation for the National Youth Games in Ilorin.
The Secretary of the Rivers State Chess Association ONUEGBU KATHERINE while speaking with our correspondent said the body will commence serious training for the players who won laurels at the one-day events.
“This one-day programme is for us to select under-12 and under-14 chess players for the state at the National Youth Games in September in Kwara State. The victorious students in this one-day tournament will undergo further training in a bid to get the best players for the state”
“The kids have done marvellously well and we believe with our guidance the players will give the state a better representation at the youth games in September. We promise to do our best to prepare the students for the competition and we are hoping to win laurels for Rivers State” she said.
A board member of the Rivers State Chess Association EZINA LOVEDAY described the one-day chess competition as a success.
He said a lot of players were discovered during the one-day tournament.
Ezina stated the Rivers State Chess Association will monitor the players in camp and will inspire them to dream of winning medals for the state at the National Youth Games.
He also appealed for corporate organizations to support the chess association with boards and timers to improve the performance of the players.
Some of the students who participated in the competition expressed joy for winning laurels at the event.
Our correspondent reports that 45 students from six different schools took part in the one-day Chess tournament at the Port Harcourt Club 1928.
