Rivers House of Assembly commits pension reforms bill to House committe

Rivers State House Of Assembly has committed the pension reforms bill, 2019 to a committee for a study.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani committed the Bill to the House Committee on SSG/HOS and Pension Matters and directed them to present their report in two weeks time to the House.

The bill sponsored by the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly- Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule is to repeal a law enacted during the past administration which has made payment of pension gratuities impossible.

Amaewhule who led the debate on the Rivers State Pension Reform Bill, 2019 on the floor of the House opined that repealing the Rivers State Contributory Pension Scheme for Employees in the Public Service Law (No.7 of 2009) and the Rivers State Contributory Pension Scheme for Employees ( Amendment No.1 of 2012) is the best thing to do in the interest of the Pensioners and the state.

Quoting a famous philosopher- Thomas Hobbes, he stated that “the law is the Public conscience”.

He also urged his colleagues to give their maximum support to the bill that is intended to remove problems associated with the existing legal and policy frameworks for effective pension administration in the State.
