Benvic Cricket Club humiliated Whales Cricket team by 79 Runs to win the Port Harcourt Cricket League one day international ODI Series Trophy.
The match which took place at the University of Port Harcourt cricket oval was well attended by officials from the Ministry of Sports.
Also, Benvic Cricket Club players almost scooped all the Individual Awards as Jerome Mbom, Ifeanyi Uboh, Divine Uranta, Oribi Abiye won the Series Batsman, Bowler, Youngster & Promising Player respectively while Kunle Olagunju won the Series Wicket Keeper’s Award & MVPs’ Award.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Rivers State Cricket Association Nnamdi Idika said the aim of the league is to develop the game at the grassroots.
He stated that four players from the Port Harcourt league are currently with the under-19 team that just qualified for the World Cup in 2020.
Nnamdi Idika stated that they will continue to invest in their developmental program ”Cricket Wild Fire’ which is targeted at kids in primary and secondary schools in the state.
He noted that the cricket association in the state will do more to attract sponsors for their grassroots tournaments and training.
The Chairman of the Rivers State Cricket Association also congratulated the men’s under-19 cricket team for qualifying for the 2020 cricket world cup for the first time.
The tournament will be the first time a Nigerian team will be featuring in a cricket world cup.
A board member of the Rivers State Cricket Association Cyril Djeba called on different sporting federations to always elect people with the passion of the sports in their various boards.
He said that when people with passion are elected into office they will initiate policies that will develop sports at the grassroots.
