World Rivers Day: Group frowns at indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Nigerian rivers

An Environmental Right group in Nigeria, the Foundation for the conservation of Nigerian Rivers has frowned at the indiscriminate dumping of refuse at the creeks in Rivers State.

The Foundation for the conservation of Nigerian Rivers said that the unchecked dumping of refuse at the creeks is damaging aquatic lives in rivers across the state.

The Executive Director of the Foundation for Conservation of Nigerian Rivers IRIKEFE DAFE in a statement to mark the 22nd annual International Day of Action for Rivers said many rivers like River Niger is drying up.

He said many of the world’s rivers face severe and increasing threats associated with climate change, pollution, and industrial development.

IRIKEFE DAFE stated that the group shall be marking the International Day for Rivers through a lecture to be delivered by on 20th March to Nigeria Environmental Society (NES ) Rivers State Chapter with the Title “Achieving Legal Rights for River Ethiope: The Journey so far”.

Dafe added that Rivers can generate enough revenue for the country when we take good care of them. He noted that rivers are part of the criteria used by FIFA and International Olympic Committee IOC to choose countries to host sporting events.

The International Day of Action for Rivers is a day dedicated to solidarity – when diverse communities around the world come together with one voice to say that our rivers matter.
