Gunmen Storm Police Station, Kill DPO, Pregnant Police Officer, Three Others

Gunmen last night attacked Afuze Police Station in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a pregnant police officer and three others.

The gunmen freed detainees and carted away rifles and other ammunition.

Reports say the gunmen stormed the station with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), which they exploded before carting away rifles and other ammunition.

A local resident who said the gunmen, who were about 10 in number, arrived at the station at about 8 p.m., shooting sporadically before killing the officers.

The resident who pleaded anonymity, said the attack, which lasted for over 30 minutes, saw the gunmen freely detonating their IEDs before gaining access to the armoury where they carted away weapons.

He added that most of the vehicles parked at the station were destroyed.

The resident said after the attack on the station, the gunmen went to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the local government where they destroyed police vehicles parked at the premises.

“We suddenly started hearing sounds of gunshots and explosions at the police station. The gunmen caught the policemen unaware.”

“We were all afraid to come out. By the gunshots died down, we heard that the DPO and four officers were killed. This is strange to us here. We have never experienced such an attack in this town,” he said.
