International Women’s Day

Florence Uwaeme

The Rivers state House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs in collaboration with International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Ikwerre Women Forum (IWF), Centre for Gender Equality And Youth Development and Greater Women & Youth Support Forum is calling on everybody to come join them in celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day by coming out en masse to support their ‘A Walk For Peace and Justice’ which is slated to take off at Isaac Boro Park by Mile 1 flyover by 7:00am and finally to their final destination which is The Rivers State House of Assembly Auditorium.

The International Women’s Day is globally celebrated annually in honour of women’s remarkable contribution to the society. The day commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable society. This year’s celebration is themed ‘Balance for Better’.

If you are in Port Harcourt, feel free to join in this walk for peace and justice. Considering the civic unrest in some parts of the state due to the past and coming election in the state which has been laced with violence and voter intimidation by security operatives in the state, one must say that the tag for this walk is not just necessary but timely.

After the assemblage at The Rivers State House of Assembly Auditorium, there will be light refreshment and viewing of short documentary video that tells the story of Nigerian women who have written their names in the sands of time despite all that they faced.

Happy International women’s day to all Rivers State women, as we walk tomorrow, may we find peace and justice, more especially, may there be Balance for Better living in Nigeria.
