Breaking: Gunmen kill two policemen in Rivers State

Two policemen deployed for presidential and national assembly elections in Rivers have been killed.

The police officers were ambushed by the gunmen at Botem area of the East-West road in Tai Local Government Area.

Recall that on the eve of the rescheduled election, gunmen shot a policeman dead at the Rukpoku area in Obio/Akpor local government. The gunmen also took away the rifle of the slain officer.

Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni who confirmed the development to theportcitynews said the armed men launched a daring attack on the officers, shot them and took away their rifles.

DSP Omoni also said that the Police is on the trail of the gunmen.

He said that security has been beefed up in that area to stem the tide of further attacks

According to him, the Command has escalated its mandate to security officers to be alert especially during the period of the elections.

“I can confirm that sad incident to you that that incident happened. Two of our men were killed in Botem, Tai LGA in an ambush. Other officers tried to repel them but the armed men escaped.

“Our officers from the Tai Division swooped into action but before they got there the boys had escaped. They combed the bushes but couldn’t find them.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the incident and we are working to find the boys and bring them to book.
