Commercial drivers to tackle extortion by security agents in Rivers State

Drivers Welfare Association in Rivers State, on Saturday, summoned an emergency of its members next week Thursday in Port Harcourt to strategize on how to tackle the issue of extortion, molestation and intimidation of commercial drivers in the state by security agencies, especially men of Nigerian Police.

It was also gathered that other issues to be discussed include how to tackle extortion of drivers by louts.

Mr Oliver Onyeje, a commercial driver who spoke to Theportcitynews said the association has resolved to stand against any form of intimidation from security agencies in 2019.

He said that the meeting was slated for next week Thursday because by then most of their members who travelled for Christmas holidays must have returned, adding that the venue for the meeting is not yet known.

The issue of extortion by police officers in the state has become mind-boggling, with experts claiming police officers at Mile 3 make over 30, 000 from commercial drivers plying that route.

Drivers who refuse to pay are delayed or arrested while some have their vehicles taken from them.

But the police command in the state denies reports that their men engage in unlawful activities like extortion, asking citizens to come report incidents with proof
