Police assure Rivers residents of crime-free festivity, ban fireworks

The Rivers State Police Command has assured Rivers people of adequate security before, during and after the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.

At a press briefing on Thursday in Port Harcourt, the State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed said the command has intensified patrols along the East-west road and its adjoining routes to forestall security breach.

The state police boss also emphasized the ban on fireworks popularly called knockouts and warned retailers to stop the sale forthwith as the command would arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable.

“Let me also use this medium to advise parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to desist from the use of fireworks as anyone caught will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said

CP Ahmed further advised politicians to play by the rule in the forthcoming 2019 general elections, adding that the police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute those violating the laws of the nation.

He said, “we want to assure the public that we will provide a level playing field for political parties as we will not the partisan”.

The state police commissioner also directed all political parties to put the command on notice ahead of their planned rallies so as to enable the police to guarantee them adequate security.
