The Nigerian Institute of Surveyors says the lack of proper monitoring and supervision is the cause of the collapse of high rise buildings in Nigeria.
The Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Rivers State Chapter, Dr.Chukwudi Ezi made this known during the Public Lecture/Reception in honour of the Surv Alabo Charlesye Charles as the 21st President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Chukwudi Ezi said most on-going construction works in the country are not well monitored by professionals in the built industry and lamented the attitude of most contractors to cut corners instead of following laid down rules and principles in the construction industry.
He stated that professionals in the built industry will partner with the Rivers State Government to end the issue of building collapse in the state.
Chukwudi Ezi also said the Institution is working with the Surveyor-General of the state to end the issue of quackery in Rivers State.
In his address, the President of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors NIS Surv.Alabo Charlesye Charles said the national executive of the body is partnering with stakeholders in the industry to resolve the lingering crisis between NIS and their regulatory agency, the Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria SURCON.
He said the different lawsuits against SURGON is not doing the surveying profession any good.
Alabo Charles also called on young surveyors to follow the ethics of the profession and avoid shortcuts.
In his speech during the event, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Eberechi Adele, frowned at the flagrant disobedience of court orders by different governments in the country.
Eberechi Adele who is the guest speaker at the event said that disobedience of court orders is a desecration of judicial institutions and called on governments to abide by the rule of law.
Eberchi Adele said that the country cannot witness good governance when leaders are not following the rule of law.
