The much-hyped 2018 Bonny Island Marathon has ended with so much drama as Success Yakubu, Onomoudeke David, and Confidence Udim, all non-indigenes, emerging winners and first and second runner-ups.
Yakubu, with tag number 0026, who has won every marathon race in Bonny Local Government Area, won in 83.36 seconds.
A female athletic, Blessing Edet, 0121, who finished first among the participating female athletes, was also given an award.
The athletes took off from the Finima Stadium and ran to the Coal Beach and then to the Bonny Youths Federation Secretariat, along King Perekule Bypass where the race terminated.
According to the organizers, 3,000 athletes in all participated in the Marathon.
It was Reported that Yakubu Success was the winner in the race. Though he said he would not participate in any marathon on the island again, having won every competition prior to this one, he, however, applauded the organizers for the opportunity to showcase his talent.
Onomuodeke, on his part, said he was glad to have emerged first runner-up, stated that he was motivated to participate in the next edition given what he has seen today.
He advised the organizers to properly manage the right of way for the participants next time, regretting that many of the runners had challenge accelerating due to traffic problems on the way.
The second runner-up, Confidence Udim, 0056, said he was happy to emerge third in the race. He asked the organizers to increase the prize money for subsequent editions.
