Wike beats Ambode, Okowa to win Sports Governor of the year award

Nyesom Wike was on Friday installed as Nigeria’s Sports Governor of the Year by the Nigerian Sports Awards.

Wike was chosen ahead of Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa .

The organisers of the ceremony held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, said that Governor Wike has improved sports through investments and promotion of sporting activities.

He was commended for sponsoring the African Wrestling Championship and laying the foundation for the qualification of the Super Eagles for the World.

The organisers further praised the governor for the development of sporting facilities such as the Diete Spiff Civic Centre and the ongoing construction of the Real Madrid Football Academy in Port Harcourt.

Represented by Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Boma Iyaye, the Rivers State Governor reiterated his commitment to the promotion of sports as a veritable tool for youth empowerment.

It will be recalled that Governor Wike bagged the Power of Sports (POS) Africa earlier in the year, during the International Conference of International Sports Press Association in Brussels, Belgium.
