Okenyi Kenechi

A stray bullet alleged to have been shot by policemen killed one person at Emenike Junction, by St. Andrews State School, Diobu, Port Harcourt on Thursday.

The man who is yet to be identified died a few minutes of being hit by the stray bullet.

Eyewitnesses said the unfortunate incident happened at about 3p.m.

Although it was not immediately clear which Police team fired the shot or which the direction it came from, residents said that firing of bullets by the police is common in the area and has resulted in several deaths.

About eight persons were killed in the area two weeks ago during a supremacy battle between rival cult groups.

Among the killed was a corn seller who was used as a body shield by one of the cultists.

The area has also witnessed a spike in cult-related killings and police brutality since the state government disbanded community-based vigilante groups two years ago.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, is yet to confirm or respond to the incident when contacted at press time.
