Only house of assembly can investigate the finances of Rivers State – Okah

The Rivers State Government has reiterated its earlier position that only the State House of Assembly has the right to investigate its financial activities.

This as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, continues its investigation into several withdrawals made by the state over the past three years.

State Commissioner for Information, Emma Okah said these while briefing newsmen shortly after appearing before the Joint Committee of the Rivers State House of Assembly auditing the financial activities of agencies and ministries.

Okah, however, urged all Ministries, agencies, MDAs and Commissions to appear before the Committee and account for the funds committed to them by the Rivers state government.

According to him, “There is no way democracy can wear a beautiful look without an entrenched accountability.

“You owe the people an explanation of how you spent their money and at a time when we are entering the season of politics one of your strengths is your ability to let the people know that you are accountable.

“That is why I commend the Rivers State House of Assembly for carrying out their oversight function to show that they can bring the Executive to answer questions.

“That is to show that it does not lie with the Federal government or any agency to try and take the responsibility of the State Assembly.”

The Rivers state government has been in a running battle with the Federal government over alleged moves by the EFCC to investigate the financial activities of the State.
