Rivers United’s Akande, grateful for support

The Pride of Rivers’ shot-stopper is grateful to the state government for the psychological support that aided his injury recovery.

Rivers United’s Abiodun Akande has stated that the psychological support he got from the Rivers State Government aided his recovery from the horrific leg break injury he sustained 16 months ago.

Akande suffered the injury on July 23, 2017during a league game against Wikki Tourists which they won 3-1 but he collided with an onrushing Giant Elephants’ striker which left him with multiple fractures of the right leg.

The former Shooting Stars goalkeeper said so many thoughts ran through his mind as soon as he sustained the injury and one of them was that whether he would still be able to play football again.

“I thought my career was over at that instant. I recall that the Rivers State Commissioner (Hon. Boma Iyaye) ran towards me, with several other officials assuring me, while I was in tears, that the sponsors of the club would not abandon me. He assured me that I would get the best possible care and that my financial entitlements would still be paid.

“Psychologically that was a big boost and it aided my complete recovery. I have to also thank the sponsors of the club, the Rivers State Government for the role they played in my recovery to full fitness.”
