A federal high court in Port Harcourt has granted bail to two defendants charged with the importation of 7.5-kilogram container load of cocaine.
The bail bond was in the sum of 10 million Naira each and two sureties in like sum.
Ruling on the bail application brought by the defendants’ applicants, the trial judge, Justice Oshomah ordered them to be remanded in prison custody until their bail conditions are perfected.
Counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Bridget Viashima stated some crucial aspects of the defendants’ bail conditions.
“The defendant applicants, Victor Chukwudi and Martins Wachukwuchibu were ordered by the court to deposit their travelling passports to the court. One of their sureties must be a civil servant of not less than grade level 14 who must obtain approval from his or her director to surety them.
“The court also ordered the accused persons not to travel outside the country without obtaining permission from the court,” NDLEA lawyer said.
Also, one of the lawyers to the defendants M. Saliu expressed satisfaction in the court’s decision to grant his clients bail, adding that they will fulfil the bail conditions.
