Rivers APC Chair states reason for adopting indirect primary

The Rivers State All Progressives Congress has adopted indirect primary as the method of choosing its candidates for the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

The decision came after the options of direct, indirect and consensus mode of primary were put into voice vote during the party’s state executive committee meeting at the party secretariat in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

At the end of the voting exercise, stakeholders of the party across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State voted in favour of an indirect primary.

The scores were; direct primary one vote, consensus primary; three votes and indirect primary; 106 votes respectively.

Speaking after the voting exercise, the state chairman of the party who also presided over the meeting, Honourable Ojukaye Flag Amachree said: “Let me sincerely thank you for taking this decision. You are aware that in our National Executive Council meeting, each state was given the power to adopt its mode of the primary.

“We received a directive from the national secretariat to call for a state executive committee meeting and that is what we have done. I want to announce to Nigeria and the rest of the world that the Rivers State All Progressives Congress has agreed to go for the indirect primary.”

Mr Flag Amachree also attributed the decision of the stakeholders to opt for an indirect primary to several reasons which include; insecurity, lack of database system and logistics.

Notable stakeholders in attendance were: Senator representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, Andrew Uchendu, Deputy National Secretary of the party, Mr Victor Giadom, party state executive committee members, former national and state assembly members among others.
