Rivers State is capable of paying ₦56,000 minimum wage – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress has said the Rivers State Government is capable of paying the ₦56,000 minimum wage to workers in it’s Labour force if the bill for the increase of the minimum wage is passed.

The chairperson of the Nigeria labour Congress, NLC Rivers State Beatrice Otubo said this while speaking to Journalists on the planned new minimum wage.

Beatrice Otubo said the Rivers State Governor, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike had earlier promised workers in Rivers State that he would implement the new wage bill when passed into law.

She said: “So when we’re talking of lack of funds or paucity of funds, have the lifestyles of these politicians diminished? They’re still living this same large lifestyle, even about their aides everything is happening.

“Why is it that when it comes to the issue of workers salary, then we begin to say there is lack of fund, there is lack of that?

“Somebody as a very senior officer like myself, if I tell you my salary you will cry. And that’s something I take home. But that is something a little boy in my place who is a politician will use and give it to maybe a small girl to go to shopping with, and that’s what I take for 30 days and people are happy.

“So we are saying that they should do the needful.
