EFCC is now a political tool for oppression – Annkio Briggs

Reactions have continued to trail the operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission {EFCC}.

Niger Delta Activists, Ankio Briggs, who spoke to our reporter, Tina Amanda, said the anti-graft agency has deviated from the main purpose of its establishment which is fighting crime and corruption.

According to her, the commission is now a tool to intimidate and terrorize people with different views from the ruling party.

‘’Right now EFCC is seen not just in Nigeria but worldwide as an arm terrorising the people whether they are politicians in the opposition or people who are not politicians, but whom the government feels they need to apply pressure on.

“That is not why EFCC was set up they have deviated, the way they are going about it and their activities, when in one minute someone who was in a ruling party and is no longer in the party, then the next day they will be arrested by EFCC and charged to court‘’

She stressed that it is unconstitutional to freeze people ’s accounts without a proper court order.

“Before you can freeze anybody’s account whether it is a state account or personal account, you must have a court order. We are in a democracy, but EFCC seems to be able to do that. The Governor of Benue state who was a member of the ruling party who has been criticizing and talking about how his people are being murdered within hours of having defected, EFCC just woke up to the realization that he has a crime to answer for. It becomes ridiculously obvious that EFCC is going after anyone who is no longer in the same thinking pattern with the ruling party”
