Rivers community protests military harassment

The People of Umunwaelile Community in Igbo Etche has called on President Buhari to restrain the Garrison Commander, 6 Divison Portharcourt, from encroaching on their land.

This is as the community, on Monday, protested recurring cases of incessant harassments in the hands of soldiers attached to the area.

The community members who carried placards with several inscriptions told our correspondent that the garrison commander, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army Port Harcourt, Brigadier General Bande has been constantly intimidating indigenes of the community with his men.

They accused the military of perpetrating humanitarian crises due to their several acts of intimidation, forceful siege on communal land and other forms of brutality, saying that the military’s action of taking over their ancestral land without due compensation should stop forthwith.

Attempts by our correspondent to reach the APRO of 6 Division for comments on the matter were not successful as at the time of filing this report.
