Friends of the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr.Dakuku Adol Peterside on Thursday, commenced the distribution of free life Vests to jetties in Rivers State.
The program which kicked off at Abonnemma Wharf Jetty in Port Harcourt saw the donation of brand new Vests to Ke, Cawthorne Channel and Bakana Units of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.
Team leader of Friends of Dakuku, Hon.Engr.Victoria Nyeche informed the union that the DG was deeply touched by recent accidents on the Waterways and decided to intervene in order to put a stop to such ugly occurrences.
Speaking, the State Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union, Comrade Jumbo thanked the DG and his friends for the show of care.
He lamented that the Maritime workers have been abandoned by the successive State Governments which have no visible policies to address the challenges faced by the Riverine people of the State.
Also speaking, the Chairmen of the respective units appreciated Dr.Dakuku for the donation and promised to use the vests judiciously.
The project is a novel idea targeted at providing free life vests to nearly all the jetties in the State.
