Nigeria finishes 3rd on medal table in Asaba

Team Nigeria finished third on the overall medals table at the just concluded athletics championship which held at the newly constructed 22,000 capacity Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

Nigeria finished with a total of nine gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

The team got three gold medals in the Triple Jump Event, 400m Women’s Hurdles Event and the 4x400m Women’s Relay event on the final day of the championship.

Nigeria also won a silver medal in the 200m event and two more bronze medals in the javelin men and 4x400m men’s event.

Team Kenya emerged the overall champion at Asaba 2018 finishing first on the medals table with 11 gold medals, six silver and two bronze medals.

South Africa occupied the second position with nine gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals.

Completing the top five countries at the biennial athletics championships are Morocco and Ethiopia.

Chairman of the local organizing committee, Solomon Ogba also announced that for the first time in the history of the African championships, athletes from Nigeria and other African countries will go home with monetary awards and medals.

According to Ogba, gold medalists will get a cash prize of $3000 each, silver medalists will be rewarded with $2000, while bronze medalists will pocket $1000.

The next edition of the championship will be taking place in Algeria.
