Ikwerre community lives in fear as clashes between rival cult groups escalate

Residences of Omerelu axis in Ikwerre local government area have called for government’s intervention and beefing up of security to protect lives and properties as they live in perpetual fear due to cult clashes in the area that have left at least 10 persons dead.

A community source who pleaded anonymity told theportcitynews.com that Omerelu community is facing serious security challenge, as a result of the recent clashes between two cult groups identified as Degbam and Iceland.

The source further stated that there have been recent cases of kidnap and killings of persons along Omerelu major high way.

Reacting to the situation, the Public Relation Officer Rivers state Police command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, told theportcitynews.com correspondent that the command is doing its best to fight criminal activities in the area while calling on the residents of Omerelu to support the police with useful information.

“As a command, we are doing our best to curtail criminal activities in that omerelu and Elele-Owerri axis.

“In recent times, there has been relative peace in that place because we decided to increase the presence of police over there that drastically reduced the criminal activities.

“We are still not resting to ensure that there will be an intolerable reduction of criminal activities in that axis.

“Our assurance to the members of that community is that they should be rest assured that we will not live any stone unturned till those boys are fished out.

“The most unfortunate thing is, there is no commensurate cooperation from the community. They have not been able to come out to share information with us. They know these boys, they are their brother’s, children, kins. They are shielding them for whatever reasons, but we are deploying technical intelligence to apprehend them” he assured.
