Federal Government ignoring ongoing genocide in Ogoni Land – MOSOP President

The President for the Movement of the survival of Ogoni people, MOSOP, Legborsi Pyagbara, has appealed to the Federal Government to urgently provide potable water to some communities in Ogoni Land that were impacted by oil exploration activities.

Legborsi Pyagbara said the decision of the Federal Government to allow consumption of polluted drinking water in Ogoni is a critical health issue there, adding that the people of the area are gradually falling ill and dying as a result of the contaminated drinking water which he says amounts to genocide.

“You know there was a time I said here that what is going on in Ogoni amounts to genocide.

“People are dying on a daily basis. People are breathing chemicals everyday. Some of these chemicals stay in your body 10 years before they overwhelm you and kill you.

“Know that a report commissioned by you had clearly said the level of pollution is so high. That is enough to impose a sense of National emergency or water crisis in Ogoni area.

“But what are we seeing so far? Nobody either from the state to the Federal has shown or demonstrated that we need to deal with an emergency situation that we’ve seen.

Legborsi Pyagbara also warned against the resumption of Oil activities in Ogoni Land without first cleaning the environment and providing basic needs for the Ogoni people.
