Famine imminent – Agriculturist warns

An Agriculturist in Rivers state has raised alarm over the impending food crisis in the country if the herdsmen attacks on farmers are not effectively addressed and dealt with squarely.

The Chairman, Agric and Agro- Allied Trade group, Portharcourt Chambers of Commerce industry mines and Agriculture, Emmanuel Ogbonda, disclosed this to Theportcitynews.com correspondent Tina Amanda in an interview.

According to him, the nation will soon be experiencing a shortage in the food supply if the farmers who ensure food provision cease to work as a result of security challenges.

“There is no way that incessant attacks on farmers will not be an opportunity for famine. Farmers who are supposed to be on their farms are afraid of going back to farm because of herdsmen attacks and the federal government is too silent about it.

“These farmers bring food to the market and feed the people. When these foods are no longer there, when the farmers are no more working, both the farmers and the people will be hungry”

He stressed further that the Federal government is taking too much time to fight the insurgents that are crippling the economy of the nation.

“Every government, their oat into office is to provide security. Its there in the constitution and if the government cannot give security to the lives and property of its people, the best option is to resign.

“Thes herdsmen cannot be so powerful than the government. The government is licensed and have authority with the willpower to fight this insurgency.

The insurgency is not too big that our Nigeria Army cannot fight, but the problem is our political will. Until we begin to do things the way it supposed to be, carrying out our democratic process properly, we will continue to experience these problems”
