Owerri residents are having a field day fetching Dual Purpose Kerosene, DPK, – also known as domestic kerosene- after a fuel tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of kerosene fell in Owerri, the Imo State capital Wednesday, spilling its content.

The accident happened around 12.30pm along Port Harcourt-Owerri highway, near Imo State Secretariat.

The tanker, suspected to have fallen while trying to avoid potholes at a dilapidated portion of the highway in front of INEC office in Owerri.

Hundreds of residents armed with buckets, basins, and kegs, were scrambling to scoop the product from the along the road and from the gutters while others were fetching directly from the fallen tanker.

Our correspondent, who witnessed the incident, reports that commuters were worried about possible fire explosion from the flowing fuel.
